Hoo Hoo Hoo Whooooo???

 When we went for our walk on Zaraya's birthday, we had already read Owl Moon, along with All About Owls and, oh boy, another book on owls that I can't remember the title of right now.  There was a fantastic surprise for us on the trail!!

Right away both girls exclaimed, "why is the owl out now? They're nocturnal!" :) Children have amazing memories.  This owl was hiding in the grassy area which was very large.  We got pretty close to see him, then continued our walk.  On the way back, he was still there, hiding.  The kids were worried he might be injured but he did fly well, right above the grass line. I think he was more worried about the dozens of eagles that were sitting in the trees not too far off. The tide was low, there was lots of dead fish laying around; this was a major feasting ground for many that day.

When we got home Kzena pulled out her owl lapbook and looked at the different owl pictures, and came to the conclusion that this was a Barred Owl.  Anyone think differently?
